Honey Ant Dreamers

 Coming in 2026…

CJZ and Savage Films are proud to be producing Honey Ant Dreamers, a dramatic feature film recounting the unsung story of one of the world’s great art movements.

In the early 1970s tribal groups from Papunya in the Australian Western Desert fought against racist assimilation policies by taking up arms – not guns or spears – but paint brushes. Sacred symbols once painted on their bodies and in the sand migrated to canvas and took the contemporary art world by storm. This seminal Australian story has high drama, comedy, pathos and a wonderfully triumphant ending. At the centre of this revolutionary act to preserve law and culture was mercurial elder Kaapa Tjampitjinpa, an artistic genius and notorious scallywag.

Honey Ant Dreamers is an archetypal tale of a downtrodden people fighting for their very survival through art. It’s a universal, but uniquely Australian story that speaks to reconciliation in a county still struggling to achieve it.
